Weight loss after 40 - is it really harder?

Turned 43 last month and weight loss feels WAY harder than it was in my 20s. Same effort, slower results. Is this actually a thing or am I just imagining it?

Your metabolism does decline with age, but less than most people think — about 1-2% per decade after 30. The bigger factors are usually:

  • Less muscle mass (from less activity over the years)
  • Lower NEAT (desk job, less active lifestyle)
  • Hormonal changes (especially for women approaching menopause)
  • More stress, less sleep

The good news: these are all addressable.

42 here. It IS harder but not impossible. I found that I need to prioritize sleep and stress management way more than I did in my 20s. Those things directly affect cortisol and water retention.

Resistance training becomes even more important as you age. Maintaining muscle mass is crucial for keeping your metabolism up. If you're not lifting, start.

Protein needs actually go UP with age because your body becomes less efficient at using it (anabolic resistance). Aim for the higher end of protein recommendations.

45 here. What worked in my 20s doesn't work now. Had to completely revamp my approach. More protein, more sleep, less cardio, more lifting. Results are slower but still happening.

Thanks everyone. Sounds like I need to focus more on muscle preservation, sleep, and patience. Adjusting expectations rather than giving up. I can work with that.

48 here. Losing weight slowly but it's the best I've ever felt because I'm doing it sustainably this time. Blood markers all improved. Don't compare your timeline to younger people.

Stress management is the sleeper factor. Cortisol increases with age and life responsibilities pile up. High cortisol = water retention + poor sleep + increased appetite. Address the stress and weight loss gets easier.
