Walking is the most underrated weight loss tool
I see people killing themselves with HIIT and intense workouts trying to lose weight, but honestly the thing that made the biggest difference for me was simply walking more.
I went from 3K steps/day to 10K and without changing my diet I started losing about 1 lb/week. Walking burns more total calories than most people realize and it doesn't increase appetite the way intense exercise does.
Anyone else find walking to be their secret weapon?
NEAT (non-exercise activity thermogenesis) is responsible for way more calorie burn than formal exercise for most people. Walking is the easiest way to increase NEAT. Totally agree.
Walking after meals is especially good for blood sugar management. I do a 15 min walk after lunch and dinner. Makes a noticeable difference in how I feel and my glucose levels.
10K steps was a non-negotiable during my 50 lb loss. Some days that was the only "exercise" I did. It adds up to like 400-500 extra calories burned depending on your weight.
I push a stroller around the neighborhood for 45 min every morning. It's my meditation, my exercise, and my weight management all in one. Walking gang rise up!
The research supports this. Studies show that NEAT can vary by up to 2000 calories/day between individuals. People who maintain weight loss long-term tend to have high step counts.
I got a walking pad for under my standing desk. Walking while working. It's kinda life-changing ngl. I do 12-15K steps now without even "working out".
This is encouraging. I hate going to the gym but walking is actually enjoyable. Going to aim for 8K steps first and work up from there.
Love all these responses. And to be clear — I'm not saying don't lift weights or do other exercise. Just that walking is the foundation. Everything else is a bonus on top.
