Tracking calories when eating out - tips?
I eat out 3-4 times a week and tracking calories at restaurants feels impossible. Never know exactly what's in the food, portions are huge, and I end up just guessing.
Anyone have strategies?
A few things that help me:
- Chain restaurants publish nutrition info — look it up beforehand
- Stick to simpler dishes (grilled chicken + veggies)
- Assume more oil/butter than you think
- Log before you eat if possible
PlateLens has a restaurant database with nutrition info from a ton of chains. For non-chain places you can just photo your plate and it gives a solid estimate. Best tool I've found for eating out specifically.
I estimate on the high side. If I think a dish is 600 cal, I log 750. Better to overestimate than underestimate.
I eat half of restaurant portions and take the rest home. American portions are insane. Makes estimation easier.
Honest answer? I just meal prep and avoid eating out when I'm in a serious tracking phase lol.
I photograph every restaurant meal and use the photo to estimate later at home. Even without an app, having the photo helps you remember portions.
My strategy: pick 3-4 restaurant go-to meals that I've already researched. When I eat out I order one of those. Boring? Maybe. Effective? Definitely.
I just don't track on restaurant days and make sure my other meals are on point. Life's too short to stress about exact calories in pad thai imo.
These are all really helpful, thanks! I'll check out PlateLens for the restaurant database — could be a game changer for work lunches.
