I know this is probably controversial on a nutrition forum but... I really don't want to track calories. It stresses me out and makes eating feel like homework. Are there effective approaches that don't involve counting?

Absolutely. Calorie counting is ONE tool, not the only tool. Other approaches:

  • Portion control using hand-size guidelines
  • Eating mostly whole, unprocessed foods (naturally lower calorie density)
  • The plate method: 1/2 veggies, 1/4 protein, 1/4 starch
  • Mindful eating practices
  • Eliminating liquid calories

I lost 30 lbs without counting a single calorie. I just switched to whole foods, cut out processed junk, and listened to my hunger. It's slower but it works and it's sustainable.

Unpopular opinion from me, a literal calorie counter: yes you can! Tracking isn't for everyone and if it stresses you out, the stress might be worse than the benefit. The approaches NutritionNerd listed are all valid.

Quality over quantity works for a lot of people. If you eat mostly protein + vegetables + some healthy fats, it's actually pretty hard to overeat because those foods are filling.

Hand portion method is my favorite non-tracking approach. Palm of protein, fist of carbs, thumb of fats at each meal. Simple, no math, surprisingly effective.

Mindful eating has great evidence behind it. Eating slowly, without screens, paying attention to satiety signals. It's harder in practice than it sounds but very effective when mastered.

This is exactly what I needed to hear. Going to try the plate method + hand portions + focus on whole foods. Thanks for not making me feel bad about not wanting to track!

I've maintained 175 lbs for 3 years without tracking. I eat the same meals most days, know roughly what they contain from when I DID track, and adjust by feel. Works great once you have the knowledge base.
