Is breakfast really the most important meal?
I skip breakfast every day and feel fine. My parents think I'm destroying my health. Is there actual evidence that breakfast is important or is it just something cereal companies made up?
The "breakfast is the most important meal" claim is not well-supported by evidence. Studies are mostly observational and confounded by other lifestyle factors.
People who eat breakfast tend to have healthier lifestyles overall, but that doesn't mean breakfast CAUSES better health. Correlation vs causation.
Cereal companies literally funded the original "breakfast is important" research. Not saying it's completely wrong, but definitely take it with a grain of salt (no pun intended).
I haven't eaten breakfast in 3 years. Best shape of my life. My morning focus is better without a blood sugar spike from cereal or toast.
For me breakfast IS important because without it I binge at lunch. But that's individual — if you function fine without it, don't force it.
For athletes it can matter. I can't run well on an empty stomach. But for general health, meal timing is far less important than total daily intake.
The most important meal is whichever one helps you maintain a healthy overall diet. For some people that's breakfast, for others it's not. Individual variation is huge.
Showing this thread to my parents lol. Thanks for the evidence-based answers.
I'll never skip breakfast because I love smoothies too much. But I recognize that's a preference, not a health requirement.
