Transitioning to plant-based - tips for making it stick?
Want to go plant-based for health and environmental reasons but every time I try I last about 2 weeks and then cave. What are your tips for making the transition stick?
Don't go cold turkey (pun intended). My biggest tip: transition gradually.
- Week 1-2: Replace one meal per day with plant-based
- Week 3-4: Two meals
- Week 5+: All meals, with flexibility for occasional exceptions
Also: focus on what you CAN eat, not what you can't. There are SO many amazing plant foods.
Learn to cook 5-6 plant-based meals you actually ENJOY before making the switch. If you go vegan and don't know how to cook plants, you'll be eating sad salads and giving up in a week.
Be kind to yourself. If you eat cheese one day, you haven't "failed." Progress over perfection. Reducing animal product consumption by 80% is better than quitting because you couldn't do 100%.
Cheese was the hardest thing for me to give up. Nutritional yeast is a game changer — cheesy flavor, packed with B12, sprinkle it on everything. Also cashew cream-based sauces are shockingly good.
Expect some digestive adjustment. If you suddenly eat way more fiber, you'll be gassy for 2-3 weeks. Your gut bacteria need time to adapt. Increase fiber gradually.
Meal prep makes it 10x easier. If you have plant-based meals ready in the fridge, you won't cave and order pizza. Prep is especially important during the transition.
The gradual transition approach is so smart. I've been going all-or-nothing and that's clearly not working. Starting with plant-based dinners this week and building from there.
Find your plant-based comfort foods. For me it's a good curry, black bean tacos, and a hearty lentil soup. Having go-to meals that feel satisfying makes all the difference.
