Is tofu/soy bad for men? (hormones)
My gym buddy says soy gives men "man boobs" and messes with testosterone because of phytoestrogens. Is this real? I actually like tofu but now I'm paranoid.
This is one of the most persistent nutrition myths. The evidence is clear: normal soy consumption does NOT affect testosterone or estrogen levels in men.
Phytoestrogens are structurally similar to estrogen but have very weak estrogenic activity. At normal dietary levels, they're not clinically relevant.
The case studies of "soy causing gynecomastia" involved men consuming absurd amounts (like 3 liters of soy milk daily for months).
The soy-estrogen myth has been debunked so many times I've lost count. Meta-analyses consistently show no effect on male hormones at normal intake. Asian countries consume WAY more soy than Western countries and don't have a testosterone crisis.
I eat tofu/tempeh daily and had my testosterone checked last year out of curiosity. 650 ng/dL. Perfectly normal. The soy fear is unfounded.
Fun fact: beer contains phytoestrogens too (from hops). Nobody worries about beer giving men "man boobs" from estrogen... even though alcohol ACTUALLY does lower testosterone. The soy double standard is bizarre.
I was anti-soy for years because of this gym bro myth. Finally read the actual research and now I eat edamame regularly. Great protein source, cheap, and the science is clear.
Thank you all! Eating my tofu stir fry right now guilt-free. Going to send this thread to my gym buddy so he can stop spreading misinformation lol.
Soy is one of the best plant protein sources available. Complete amino acid profile, high protein density, cheap, versatile. Don't let bro science rob you of a great food.
The irony: many of the people who fear soy estrogen are fine eating dairy, which contains ACTUAL mammalian estrogen. Not phytoestrogen. Real estrogen from a pregnant cow. But I digress.
