I keep seeing "track your macros" everywhere but I honestly don't know what macros are. Can someone explain like I'm 5?

Macros = macronutrients. There are three:

  1. Protein — builds and repairs muscles, keeps you full. Found in meat, eggs, dairy, beans. 4 calories per gram.
  2. Carbohydrates (carbs) — your body's main energy source. Found in bread, rice, fruit, pasta. 4 calories per gram.
  3. Fat — essential for hormones, brain function, absorbing vitamins. Found in oils, nuts, avocado, butter. 9 calories per gram.

Every food is a combination of these three. "Tracking macros" means counting how many grams of each you eat daily.

Think of it like a budget: calories are your total spending, macros are the categories (rent, food, entertainment).

Great explanation. I'd add: the RATIO of macros matters for your goals.

  • Losing weight? Higher protein helps preserve muscle.
  • Building muscle? Need adequate protein AND carbs.
  • General health? Balance all three.

There's no single "perfect" ratio — it depends on your goals, activity level, and preferences.

Simplest way to think about it: Protein = building blocks. Carbs = energy. Fat = essential systems. You need all three, the question is how much of each.

Wait so fat has MORE than double the calories of protein and carbs? That explains why nuts are so calorie-dense. Mind blown.

Don't let this overwhelm you. When starting out, just focus on getting enough protein (most people don't) and not going crazy on total calories. You can fine-tune macros later.

A good starting point for most people: 30% protein, 40% carbs, 30% fat. Adjust from there based on how you feel and your results.

This is SO helpful. The budget analogy really clicked for me. So if calories are the total budget, macros tell me WHERE those calories are coming from. Going to start paying attention to protein first. Thank you all!

I had the exact same question when I started. This forum is so helpful for beginners. No stupid questions!

There's also a fourth macro: alcohol (7 cal/gram). But we don't talk about that one in polite company lol. Just know that drinks add up fast.
